PWAC Annual Awards

Every year, PWAC offers the following awards in writing, editing and volunteer service: The Barbara Novak Award for Excellence in Humour and/or Personal Essay Writing, Best Feature Article Award, Best Short Article Award, Editor of the Year Award, Lawrence Jackson Outstanding Achievement Award, and a series of Regional Volunteer Awards.

Deadline and Electronic Submissions

There is a simple three-step process: Apply online, pay online, email your submission and proof of payment to awards@pwac.ca

Submissions will now be accepted by email. Please put the category for each application in the Subject line of your email. Payment for submissions can be made online with your Paypal account or one of the major credit cards that Paypal accepts.

Barbara Novak Award for Excellence in Humour and/or Personal Essay Writing

This award was established in 2005 to honour the memory of the late PWAC member Barbara Novak. The award recognizes excellence in the genre of humour and/or personal essay writing by a PWAC member.

Prizes: The winner receives a plaque and a gift certificate, donated by the family of Barbara Novak, and a one-year membership in PWAC.

Publication: Articles must have been published (for pay) between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015 (unpublished articles are not eligible). Date of publication must appear on submission. Length of article is open.

Number of Entries: Maximum three entries per person.

Entry Fee: $20 per entry.

Judging: Judging is carried out by the Barbara Novak family.

How to Apply: Each entry must include: a copy of the receipt for the appropriate application fee, a separate page with the entrant’s full name, address, phone number, email address, title of the submitted piece, and the name of the publication where it appeared (please provide the URL if the submission is from the web), a PDF copy of the original story with the original publication date and byline indicated, and an additional PDF of the story with the byline removed or obscured.

Submission: Email your application package to awards@pwac.ca with "Barbara Novak Award Submission” in the subject line of the email.

Incomplete entries will be ineligible and therefore discarded. All material that is submitted will not be returned. Judges will not consider any additional information from the entrant other than the story itself.

Best Feature Article Award

This award showcases excellent work by Canadian freelance writers writing feature-length non-fiction articles over 1,200 words in length. The competition is open to PWAC members and non-members. We invite members and non-members alike to circulate the call for entries widely, including other writers, editors, publishers and industry partners.

Prizes:
    First Place: $200 in cash and a free PWAC membership for the 2016/17 membership year.

    Runner-up: a free PWAC membership for 2016/17 and a certificate.

    Other finalists receive a certificate.

Eligibility: Non-fiction articles 1,200 words and over (not including the title or byline), for which payment was received. Articles must have been published in English and in a Canadian print or web media outlet. Publication date must have been between January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015. Date of publication must appear on submission.

Judging: Criteria will include writing quality, research, originality, impact and overall excellence.

Entry fee: $15 for PWAC members per entry and $25 for non-PWAC members per entry. There is no limit on the number of entries per person.

Best Short Article Award

Editor of the Year Award

PWAC recognizes how much editors bring to writers and readers alike. This award promotes outstanding Canadian editors and mutually respectful writer-editor relationships.

If you are a PWAC member in good standing, please nominate an editor who deserves this recognition. Cite specific and/or personal examples that explain what makes this editor special. Include details about how the editor’s work stood out on articles from the previous year. The more detail you can provide, the better!

Individuals can submit more than one nomination. Multiple members may submit a joint nomination. There is no entry fee. Include the editor’s full name, publication(s), mailing address, email and phone number in your nomination. Email the nomination(s) to awards@pwac.ca with the subject heading “Editor of the Year Award Nomination.”

Eligible editors must work for a magazine, newspaper, website, corporate or government publication. They can be staff editors, freelance editors or editors associated with one or more publications. They must have worked as professional editors during the previous calendar year. PWAC members and non-members alike are eligible to receive the award.

 Remember: the award honours an individual editor, not a publication or website with which she or he is affiliated.

 Criteria for judging will include, but not be limited to, an editor who:

    Shows respect to professional writers
    Supports fair pay and contracts for writers
    Displays excellent editing skills
    Communicates effectively
    Stays open to fresh ideas
    Works with writers to bring out their best, improve their skills and reach high editorial standards
    Demonstrates flexibility in the editing process
    Possesses a superior sense of story and character

 The winner and finalists each receive a plaque.

Deadline: Midnight Friday, May 6, 2016.

Lawrence Jackson Outstanding Achievement Award

PWAC recognizes outstanding contributions to the association through its Special Achievement Award. At the 1998 AGM, the award was renamed after Lawrence Jackson, who served the association as its president.

Prize: The winner receives a plaque and a free PWAC membership for the 2016-17 membership year.

Criteria:

    Specific national accomplishment in the recent year
    Volunteer involvement at the national level in past years
    Volunteer involvement at the chapter level in past years

Note: Nominees must be in good standing and may not be members of the current national board of directors.

Judging: All nominees will be considered by the national board of directors, and must not have been previous winners of the award.

Submission: PWAC members submit a formal written nominations for this award with the following information:

    Nominee’s name
    Names of two or more nominators (both of whom are PWAC members in good standing)
    An explanation of why this person is being nominated, and how she or he meets the criteria outlined above.

Deadline: Received by midnight on Friday, May 6, 2016.

Regional Volunteer Awards

These awards, established in 2005, recognize the valuable contributions of volunteer members from each of our five regions: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and the North, and British Columbia. Each regional winner receives a plaque and a gift voucher.

Judging: The current regional directors will determine the winners, but no regional director will take part in the selection process for his or her home region.

Submission: PWAC members in good standing are invited to submit formal written nominations for this award. Explain in 500 words or less why the member deserves this award.

Email submissions to awards@pwac.ca with “Regional Volunteer Awards” as the subject line.

Deadline: Received by midnight, Friday, May 6, 2016.
